Sang Mi Lee provides insights on the dynamics of the negotiation process and best practices.

MORSE Consulting’s Sang Mi Lee delivered an insightful presentation at the Fall 2023 Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD) Conference in Calgary last week. Dedicated members of the rare disease community (patients, caregivers, advocacy groups, clinicians, researchers, industry, and public sector driving drugs for rare disease (DRD) access and strategy) provided important updates and messages on how we can continue to improve and elevate our efforts. We are inspired by the passionate community and impactful initiatives we saw across Canada!

Sang Mi highlighted both the opportunities and challenges with successful DRD negotiations, and her key takeaways included the following:

  1. Let’s cultivate curiosity about outliers and foster transparency in understanding the factors that influence the speed of access from all sides.
  2. Getting the risk mitigation right one DRD at a time can take a long time – can the DRD strategy help create a framework to facilitate access and more quickly address uncertainties to a clearly defined set of high-priority drugs? How we leverage RWE as well as patient and clinician input post-HTA will have to be a part of the discussion, along with the potential for higher-level risk mitigation.
